Human rights are for every human being regardless of age, race, or class. Even though many people still struggle for their basic rights due to a wide range of issues, these rights are the mandatory responsibilities of every country on the back of international justice. And people don’t need to go in and out of the sympathy store or perform any specific task to merit human rights perks. Here is a breakdown of the different aspects of human rights.
Social Rights
Social rights involve everything a human being needs to live in dignity in our society. Things like education, medication, wellness, and social work can all fall under social human rights. It relates to people and issues that can affect anyone in the long run, like domestic violence and poor communities. It also involves rights and an adequate standard of living, housing, mental health services, and Social Security.
At the world stage, international human rights stakeholders enforce these rights by critiquing one political process after the other. They do this by appealing to democracy and applying pressure on political parties to have a strong hand over human rights abuses. Lawyers like Malliha Wilson have been actively involved in this work in Canada and a growing number of countries. Malliha Wilson is a Tamil Canadian lawyer and doubles as a named partner at the Nava Wilson LLP law firm.
After earning an undergraduate degree from McGill University and a law degree from Canada’s York University, she became a young lawyer. Malliha Wilson began her career providing legal services as the senior counsel for the Ministry of Government Services. She further served as the assistant deputy attorney general of the Government of Ontario for an 8-year term and became the first visible minority to hold that position. She later became a special legal advisor to the Investment Management Corporation of Ontario (IMCO).
She has an extensive career handling notable cases. Owing to her exemplary services in the public sector, the South Asian Bar Association bestowed a Distinguished Career Award on Malliha in 2009. The board of the Osgoode Hall Law School Alumni Association also gave her a Gold Key Award for her well-led career.
Access to Medical Care
Generally, the right to health care should be enjoyed by all without any discrimination. This basic right influences the need for development in the global health sector. Today, you can type “therapists in DC,” and it’ll bring up top mental health professionals in Washington. But some time ago, access to mental health and counseling services wasn’t as convenient as today. Mental health concerns were at best seen as mere mood disorders or some sort of paranormal behaviors. As things evolve, and with the strong backing from health laws, the world is finding a new way to merge all the different perspectives into a cohesive and workable system for all.
Cultural Rights
Cultural rights involve the right for an individual to enjoy a specific culture and participate in its related activities. Some of the essential principles underlying cultural rights are equality, human diversity, and nondiscrimination. Cultural rights advocates can lobby a government body or country to be a champion of diversity. With one member of parliament or attorney general at a time, bills can be fast-tracked to promote inclusive cultural rights worldwide.
Civil Rights
Civil rights are human rights that relate to the right to life, a fair trial, personal liberty, information, and freedom of expression. Civil rights have underpinned the advancement of political democracy across countries and have informed the civil rights evolution over the years. Political rights also tie into civil rights. They’re the kind of human rights that relate to the freedom of participation in civil and political activities without fear of discrimination or repression.
